Janet and David Daniels visited the Secondary School and discovered some of the needs of the school. The sale of cards raised enough funds to purchase 400 exercise books, chalks, pens and pencils for the school. These items, and the service and carol books, were taken back to The Gambia by Fr Sam when he visited England in November 2001.

Fr Sam was delighted to visit St Mary’s and to take part in the Sunday Eucharist and during a discussion at the Aspects of Faith Course, in addition to enjoying visiting the Church Bazaar and the Rainbow Guides. He also enjoyed his visits to St Albans and Canterbury Cathedrals. After his departure Janet and Esther planned another visit to The Gambia in January 2002 and enquired of Fr Sam what other items were required by the school. They were pleased to be able to purchase £100 of art materials (£20 donated by a member of the congregation) and these, along with a computer and printer owned by the family and clothes donated by the Oxfam shop in Potters Bar were transported to the Gambia.

During the holiday Janet and Esther visited the Nursery School. They were shocked to find the children sitting in rows and the teachers wearing the same uniform as the children. There was an obvious lack of equipment for Number and Alphabet learning which is a need to be filled.

Fundraising is continuing in order to purchase further items to send to the Secondary School for the newly established Agriculture department, items to make learning more ‘fun’ in the Nursery School and to continue supporting the Church.

Recently the PCC of St Mary’s Church received a letter requesting help for the building of a canopy extension to the church in Serrekunda, which would cost in the region of £2000. The project proposal for this extension is displayed at the back of the church in Potters Bar. The PCC of St Mary’s voted to send a donation of £500 from the intended charities donations for 2002. If you wish to make a personal donation to this project contact Janet Daniels at danielsjc@aol.com.
